Difference between positive and negative types of turning inserts

Turning inserts are usually divided into positive insert and negative insert, and their difference lies in the position and direction of the blades in the cutting process.

Positive Blade

The positive blade, also known as the main blade, is characterized by its tip facing outward and far away from the cutting area, thus producing less cutting resistance in the cutting process. The main cutting direction of the front blade is consistent with the main axis direction of the tool rest, and the machining process is more stable, so it is suitable for fine cutting and machining scenes with small change in cutting depth. Positive blades are usually used in machining situations that require high precision and surface quality of blades, such as precision turning and mirror turning.

Negative Blade

The negative blade, also known as the auxiliary blade, is characterized by its tip facing the cutting area, which is opposite to the positive cutting direction. The negative blade produces greater cutting resistance in the cutting process, but it can also bear greater cutting depth and cutting force, and has higher cutting efficiency and feed rate, which makes the negative blade suitable for rough machining and high cutting force, such as rough turning and heavy cutting. It should be noted that the main cutting direction of the negative tool is opposite to the spindle of the tool holder, and more control and balance are needed to ensure the cutting effect.

The positive and negative types of blades play an important role in machine tool processing. Generally speaking, the selection of positive and negative blades depends on cutting conditions, material types, cutting depth, surface requirements and other factors, and the selection of positive and negative types of blades should be determined according to specific processing requirements and processing materials.
