What does a good quality HSS drill look like?

HSS drills are mainly used for drilling of steel components, good quality HSS drills can ensure the cutting ability, which usually have the following characteristics:

1.Made of high quality HSS: HSS drills are made of high quality HSS material (e.g. HSS or HSS-Co), which contains alloying elements such as tungsten, molybdenum, chromium, vanadium, etc., the presence of which significantly improves the drill's hardness, abrasion resistance and heat resistance.

2.Appropriate hardness: a hardness between 58-65 HRC ensures good cutting performance and durability.

3.High precision machining: with tight dimensional tolerances and precise geometries to ensure accurate and consistent drilling.

4.Excellent cutting ability: during the cutting process, the drill should be able to maintain a stable cutting speed and cutting force to ensure processing quality and efficiency. The cutting edge is sharp and notch-free, capable of cutting materials quickly and efficiently and reducing heat generation.

5.Appearance quality: Good HSS drills should have uniform color and fine organization. The surface of the drill body should be free of cracks, inclusions and other defects, and the coating should be uniform. The use of coatings (e.g. TiN, TiAlN) enhances wear resistance, reduces the coefficient of friction and extends service life.

6.Flexural strength and toughness: with good flexural strength and toughness, not easy to break, suitable for high load work.
