What is the difference between different shapes of CNC inserts?

Cemented carbides are made from hard compounds of refractory metals (e.g. tungsten carbide, titanium carbide, etc.) and bonded metals (e.g. cobalt, nickel, etc.) by powder metallurgical processes. They have a high hardness of 89 - 93 HRA (Rockwell A scale) and good wear resistance to resist abrasion of the workpiece material.

CNC inserts made of carbide are triangular, square, round and diamond shaped.

Triangular inserts are more versatile and can be used for turning, milling and many other machining methods. Its three edges can be used in turn, improving the utilization of the insert. For example, when turning an outer circle, when one edge is worn out, the insert can be rotated to continue machining using the other edge.

Square inserts have four edges and can likewise be rotated for use when the edges are worn. It has better applications in machining such as flat milling and turning of square parts, providing a larger cutting width.

Circular inserts have a circumferential cutting edge, which allows for continuous cutting forces in milling operations. They are suitable for processing curved surfaces and complex shaped workpieces such as mold cavities.

Diamond inserts have various angles, such as 35 °, 55 °, 80 ° and so on. Different angles of rhombic inserts are suitable for different processing occasions, such as 35 ° rhombic inserts in the turning of slender shafts can reduce the cutting force to prevent deformation of the workpiece.
