What gear cutter do I need?
The selection of gear cutting tools mainly depends on the processing method, gear type, material, precision requirements and production batch.
Different gear processing methods require different tools:
Hobbing is suitable for mass production of external gears, and hob cutters are recommended.
Shaping is suitable for internal gears and special tooth shapes, and gear shaping cutters are recommended.
Shaving is used for finishing to improve the surface finish of gears, and gear shaving cutters are used.
Honing/grinding is suitable for high-precision gears, and honing cutters or involute grinding wheels are recommended.

In terms of gear types, different types of gears also require corresponding tools, such as spur gears and helical gears are suitable for hobs or forming milling cutters, bevel gears require bevel gear milling cutters or special grinding tools, and worm gears usually use worm gear hobs.
Different gear materials also affect the choice of tools. For example, when processing high-hardness materials (HRC>50), tungsten carbide tools, such as coated hobs, should be selected to improve wear resistance. For ordinary steel (HRC<50), high-speed steel tools are more cost-effective and suitable for conventional processing needs.
Choosing the right gear tool can help you process more conveniently. If you have a need for gear tools, Jinxin's experts can recommend the right gear tool type for you.
