what are hss drill bits used for?

High-Speed Steel (HSS) is a tool steel containing tungsten, molybdenum, chromium, vanadium and other alloying elements, with excellent performance. Its hardness at room temperature can reach 62 - 67HRC, can easily cut all kinds of metal materials; good wear resistance so that it can withstand a long time of cutting friction; hot hardness is a major highlight, at a high temperature of about 500 - 600 ℃, can still maintain a high hardness, suitable for high-speed cutting. At the same time, compared with carbide drills, HSS drills have better toughness and are less likely to break under complex working conditions.

HSS drills are most commonly used for drilling holes in ferrous metals (e.g. steel, cast iron) and non-ferrous metals (e.g. aluminum, copper, brass), and are also suitable for continuous cutting work on manual or mechanical drilling machines (e.g. bench drills, milling machines, CNC machine tools); in addition to metals, they are also used for the processing of hard plastics and wood (but not as efficient as special woodworking drills).

There are various types of HSS drills, and different types are suitable for different scenarios:

Twist Drill: with spiral flute design and strong chip removal ability, it is the most widely used type for general-purpose metal and wood drilling.

Center Drill: short and thick, with pointed front end and high positioning accuracy, commonly used for locating holes before machining and guiding the drilling direction of subsequent drills.

Reaming Drill: With more cutting edges, it can improve the accuracy of hole diameter, mainly used to enlarge the diameter of existing holes and improve the surface quality of the holes.

Step Drill (Pagoda Drill): With multi-layer diameter step design, it can drill step holes of different diameters at one time.

Flat Drill: Simple structure, low cost, suitable for wood drilling or simple drilling of small quantities of metal.
