EDM cutting machines, valued for their non-contact and high-precision capabilities, are primarily categorized based on electrode movement and design. The most common distinction is between high-speed wire EDM (WEDM-HS) and low-speed wire EDM (WEDM-LS). WEDM-HS features a reciprocating electrode wire, offering fast processing speeds and lower costs, making it ideal for medium-precision tasks like standard mold and hardware parts. In contrast, WEDM-LS uses a single-use, unidirectional wire for minimal wear, delivering micron-level accuracy and superior surface finish, which is essential for high-end applications such as precision aerospace components and premium molds.
Beyond wire EDM, sinker EDM (cavity EDM) specializes in complex 3D cavities and curved surfaces using a shaped electrode, without the need for cutting tools. It is frequently paired with wire EDM to complete full mold fabrication. Additionally, medium-speed wire EDM serves as a middle-ground option, upgrading the high-speed model with improved precision to bridge the cost and accuracy gap between HS and LS variants, suiting applications with moderate precision needs and budget constraints.
