How to Choose the Right Carbide Gear Shaving Cutter for Your Application?
Due to the wide variety of shapes, materials and coatings available on the market, the choice of selecting the right carbide gear shaving cutter is critical to achieving optimum gear quality, performance and manufacturing efficiency.
1. Key parameters: module, pressure angle and bore size
Before selecting a gear shaving cutter, you need to precisely match the cutter to the gear specifications of your application. Here are the three most important parameters:
Modulus: The modulus defines the dimensions of the gear teeth and directly affects the cutting geometry. Modulus mismatches can lead to poor surface finishes and inaccurate tooth shapes. Always ensure that the tool module matches the module of the gear being shaved.
Pressure angle: The pressure angle (typically 20° or 25°) affects the contact ratio and load distribution of the gear pair. Selecting the correct pressure angle ensures smooth mesh and prevents premature tool wear or gear failure.
Bore Diameter: Bore diameters must be matched to the machine tool spindle to ensure a secure mounting and radial runout stability. We offer customized bore options to accommodate special machine tools or adapter systems.
2. Coating options (TiAlN, TiN, etc.) and their advantages
Carbide shavers are often coated with advanced coating materials to extend tool life, reduce friction, and improve performance in high speed or dry cutting conditions.
TiAlN (Titanium Aluminum Nitride): Excellent high temperature resistance (up to 800°C) for dry cutting or high speed machining.
TiN (Titanium Nitride): popular choice for general purpose shaving, low friction and high hardness for low to medium speed machining.
CrN or DLC coatings: for special applications, e.g. gear shaving on stainless steel or non-ferrous metals, with anti-blocking properties and cutting surfaces.
It is important to select the coating according to the workpiece material and the machining speed.
