What are cnc inserts made of?

The core materials of CNC inserts are mainly categorized into three main groups: cemented carbide, high-speed steel and super-hard materials. Cemented carbide (such as YG, YT series) has become the mainstay of CNC machining by virtue of its high hardness (89-93HRA) and heat resistance (800-1000 ℃), especially suitable for cutting materials such as steel parts, cast iron, etc.; high-speed steel (HSS) is characterized by excellent toughness and economy, and is commonly used in complex tools and intermittent cutting scenarios, but with poorer temperature resistance (<500 ℃); super-hard materials such as PCBN and diamond (PCD) specialize in difficult-to-machine materials; PCBN is suitable for hardened steel (HRC45+), while PCD excels in non-ferrous metal machining.

The application of coating technology greatly improves the performance of inserts. Thin films of TiN, TiAlN, etc. (5-12 μm) can extend the life of carbide inserts by 3-5 times, and increase the cutting speed by 25%-70%. Ceramic inserts (alumina / silicon nitride-based) in the high-temperature high-speed cutting to show the advantages of heat resistance of more than 1200 ℃, but need to avoid shock load.

Selection of CNC insert materials requires consideration of workpiece characteristics, machining conditions and cost-effectiveness. For example, coated carbide (150-400m/min) is recommended for normal steel, silicon nitride ceramics (500-1500m/min) for cast iron, and PCBN or cobalt-rich carbide (50-150m/min) for high-temperature alloys.
