What are hss drill bits?

High-Speed Steel Drills (HSS Drills) are metal-cutting tools made of high-speed steel (HSS), designed for efficient drilling operations.

High-speed steel is a tool steel alloy containing tungsten, chromium, vanadium, and cobalt. It exhibits excellent red hardness (ability to retain hardness at high temperatures) and wear resistance. Even under high-speed drilling conditions where significant heat is generated, HSS drills maintain their hardness and cutting sharpness. They are suitable for drilling various materials, including carbon steel, alloy steel, cast iron, plastics, and wood. With a cost-effective performance ratio, HSS drills are widely used in industrial and general applications.

Types of High-Speed Steel Drills

General-purpose (e.g., W18Cr4V): For materials with hardness ≤300 HB, such as carbon steel and aluminum alloys.

High-performance (cobalt or high-vanadium grades): Ideal for difficult-to-machine materials like  high-temperature alloys and titanium alloys.

Structural variations: Include twist drills, core drills (hollow drills), and deep-hole drills.

Applications

Automotive manufacturing: Drilling engine blocks and gearbox components.

Aerospace: Precision machining of titanium alloy parts.

Electronics & medical: Micro-hole drilling for device housings and surgical instruments.
